(a) In computing the rate of increase between 1831 and 1841, the military and shipping population returned in the latter year are excluded.
(b) In computing the proportion of females to males in 1821 and 1831, it has been estimated that the numbers of men in the Army, Navy, and Merchant Service at home were 87,740 and 78,968 respectively.
(c) The areas on which the density of population have been calculated include land and inland water, but not tidal water or foreshore.
