The Conservatives were divided between Protectionists and free traders, so although they won the most seats the Whigs were able to remain in power. The Irish Repeal group improved their result, and the Chartists won their only ever victory when O'Connor himself became MP for County Cork. The "other" category also includes two seats won by the Irish Confederate Party.
