The Liberals had split over Irish Home Rule, so the Conservatives fought this election in partnership with the breakaway Unionist wing of the Liberals, led by Joseph Chamberlain and Lord Hartington. The result was a Conservative and Unionist landslide, ending a period of Liberal dominance.
