Another "khaki election" held just after the end of the Second World War, it was the first General Election for ten years. The Conservatives based their campaign on Churchill's personal record as a war leader while Labour ran on a programme of full employment, a National Health Service and a cradle-to-grave welfare state. The result was a famous victory for Labour, who came close to an absolute majority of all votes and won a very large majority in parliament.
