This election was fought in the shadow of the 1973-4 miners' strike and the "three day week", a partial shutdown of industry designed to conserve dwindling power supplies. The Conservative government fought the election on the slogan of "Who governs Britain?". This was also the first General Election after the Ulster Unionists broke away from the Conservative party, which was a major reason why no party won an absolute majority of seats. The immediate outcome was that Labour formed a government with Liberal party support, returning Harold Wilson to power for a second term as Prime Minister. Labour called a second General Election in October 1874, but gained an overall majority so small they had to continue relying on Liberal support.
