Socio-Economic Statistics for Scottish Local Areas from the 1961 Census
Approx. number of rows:
417
Table type:
Raw Data
Documentation Author:
Paula Aucott
Chronology:
The data are for the single year 1961.

Sources:

  1. The data for Scotland are taken from Volume 4 in the 1961 census entitled 'Housing', table 26, 'Characteristics of Households and Dwellings in Local Areas' covering 'Scotland, Regional Divisions and subdivisions, Burghal/Landward aggregates, Cities, Counties, Large Burghs, Small Burghs, Districts of County, Conurbation Centre, New Towns'. This is a complete transcription of the original table. The socio-economic classification columns and the percentage of households containing more than one family are based on ten percent sample figures.

Notes:

  1. The data covers all areas of Scotland and was entered in Portsmouth by Rachel Granville in Spring 2002.
  2. Where the four columns giving figures as a ten percent sample are based on small numbers they are particularly liable to chance errors.
  3. All columns concerning households, occupation density, household arrangements and household composition are restricted to households of which at least one member was present on census night.
  4. The fourth arrangement included in the columns specifying all four household arrangements is a hot water tap.
  5. Percentages based on change between 1951-1961 have been calculated on the figures for the area as constituted at the respective censuses.
  6. Those areas with boundary changes or that were constituted between 1951 and 1961 have not been noted in the transcription although they were on the original.
  7. The data covers Cities, Burghs, Districts of County, Landwards, Conurbations and New Towns as indicated by area_type:
    • CT: City (4 areas): Aberdeen, Dundee, Edinburgh and Glasgow
    • LB: Large Burgh (20 areas): These match those listed in the 1951 Industry Table
    • SB: Small Burgh (174 areas)
    • DC: District of County (197 areas)
    • LW: Landward (2 areas): These are for Nairn and Kinross, very small counties not divided into Districts of County
    • NT: New Town (3 areas): Cumbernauld, East Kilbride, Glenrothes
    • CON: Conurbation (1 area): Central Clydeside
Landwards (apart from Kinross and Nairn), Counties and Wards are not listed.

Checking:

  1. The data were checked to ensure the social-economic classification columns totalled 100 percent.
  2. The data were checked to ensure the percentage of households for differing numbers of people totalled 100 percent.
  3. The data for the regions for populations in private households were checked to ensure the totals matched the sum of the subdivisions. This has not yet had a check sum devised to be checked within the county level data.
  4. The data for the regions for the number of dwellings were checked to ensure the totals matched the sum of the subdivisions. This has not yet had a check sum devised to be checked within the county level data.
  5. The data for the regions for the number of households were checked to ensure the totals matched the sum of the subdivisions. This has not yet had a check sum devised to be checked within the county level data.
  6. The rest of the figures have yet to be checked.
  7. The geographical units have been cross-checked against the GBHGIS administrative unit gazetteer to ensure that all units are correctly identified. Each unit has a unique unit ID assigned to it and this can be used to cross-reference against other data-sets. No regions and aggregates are matched as they are not yet included in the gazetteer.
  8. The only area not matched to the gazetteer which has a specified type is the District of County of 'Cumnock and Holmhead' in Ayrshire. The original spelling for this row needs to be double-checked in the Census table. There are two possible causes. Either it should it be spelt 'Cumnock' in which case it will straightforwardly match to the District of County of the same name. Alternatively it is spelt correctly and this spelling should be added as an alternate name for this unit in the gazetteer. For the time being the g_unit has not been added.
