In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Foveran like this:
Foveran, coast par., E. Aberdeenshire, 10,637 ac., pop. 2042; contains Newburgh, on the Ythan. 5 miles SE. of Ellon sta.; 1½ mile SW. of Newbury, on Foveran Burn (flowing 7 miles E. to the Ythan), is Foveran Church; in vicinity is Foveran House.
