In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Durness like this:
Durness, par., NW. Sutherlandshire, 140,812 ac., pop. 987; contains the vil. of Durine, 20 miles NW. of Tongue; P.O., called Durness; 2¾ miles from Durine Inn is Durness Ferry, across the Kyle of Durness.
