In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Ravenscar like this:
PEAK, a place on the coast of N. R. Yorkshire; at the S extremity of Robin Hood's bay, 7½ miles S S E of Whitby. Extensive alum works are here. The adjacentheadland is called Old Peak.
