In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Padfield like this:
PADFIELD, a township in Glossop parish, Derby; on the Manchester and Sheffield railway, 1½ mile N W of Glossop. It has a wall letter-box under Manchester; and it contains the Manchester water-works. Acres, 643. Pop. in 1851, 2,051; in 1861, 1, 619. Houses, 299. The decrease of pop. was caused by the removal of work-men employed in constructing the Manchester water-works. The inhabitants are employed chiefly in cloth, thread, and cotton-yarn works.
