In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Orford Ness like this:
Orford Ness, promontory, on coast of Suffolk, at N. extremity of Hollesley Bay, 2½ miles SE. of Orford town; Orfordness High Lighthouse is 99 ft. high, with fixed light 91 ft. above high water and seen 17 miles; Orfordness Low Lighthouse is 72 ft. high, with fixed light 60 ft. above high water and seen 14 miles.
