In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Wanthwaite like this:
Wanthwaite, hamlet, 1 mile S. of Threlkeld sta., Cumberland; Wanthwaite Bridge here crosses St John's Beck; Wanthwaite Crags, ¾ mile SE. of the hamlet, are very picturesque.
