In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Tipperary like this:
Tipperary, market town, township, and par. with ry. sta., in the SW. of co. Tipperary, on river Arra, 29 miles S.E. of Limerick, 55 miles NE. of Cork, and 110½ miles SW. of Dublin - par., 4362 ac., pop. 5461; township, 794 ac., pop. 7274; P.O., T.O., 4 Banks. Market-days, Thursday and Saturday. The town has a good market for corn, butter, and other agricultural produce.
