In 1837, Samuel Lewis's Topographical Dictionary of Ireland described Milltownpass like this:
MILTOWN, a village, in the parish of KILBRIDE-PILATE, barony of FARTULLAGH, county of WESTMEATH, and province of LEINSTER, 4 ¾ miles (W. by S.) from Kinnegad, on the road from Dublin to Athlone; containing 11 houses and 62 inhabitants. It is a station of the constabulary police, and contains the parochial R. C. chapel.
