The potteries and, the large glass manufactories support, it will be seen, a population of 32,200, in the proportions of 24,600 and 7,600, and are principally carried on in the counties of Stafford, Worcester, Salop, Derby, Northumberland, and in the West Riding of York. The manufacture of gloves is principally carried on by females, and, according to our returns, embraces in all not quite 10,000 persons; it is more particularly pursued in the counties of Leicester, Nottingham, Oxford, and Worcester. The manufacture of engines and machines, which of course varies inactivity and extent with the general activity of trade and manufacture, is daily increasing in importance from the demands upon it made by the railways extending in every direction. There are 16,550 persons returned as employed upon this important branch, comprehending the most intelligent and best paid of persons, both as masters and handicraftsmen.
