Bootham is a suburb of the city of York just outside the walls north of the Minster. In the late 13th century there was a dispute between the city and St. Mary's Abbey, the latter claiming that Bootham was a free borough outside the control of the city. See 'The twelfth and thirteenth centuries: The city and ecclesiastical franchises', A History of the County of York: the City of York (1961), pp. 38-40.
